May in Pangnirtung
May in Pangnirtung
2009
I was so fortunate to participate in spring camp this year, run by the local Attagoyuk (high school) and Alookie (elementary) Schools. I went out with the high school students during the first week of camp (April 27 - May 1), and thoroughly enjoyed the experience - from getting to know the students and teachers, to learning from the guides and elders, to experiencing the floe edge and turbot fishery in Cumberland Sound, to catching char inland, to “dancing” to fiddle tunes in a camp jam. I worked with 1 teacher and 7 students particularly, as part of our NNI project as they documented their camp experiences with photo and video. Amos from the GCRC lab then joined me later in the trip, to continue working with the students in a computer lab setting. We conducted a preliminary workshop where they were able to explore various multi-media technologies (i.e. to use the footage they recorded in camp to tell about their experiences), and to help evaluate some of the atlas projects we’ve been working on. While he was there, we also got the opportunity to hike into the south end of Auyuittuq National Park with a few teachers and their friends, so some of these pictures are also included below. With this initial trip kicking off our collaboration with the high school, we learned a great deal and are eager to return next year to try out new and different activities to build on experiences this year. Many thanks in particular to Cathy Lee for her guidance, support, and patience throughout this trip, and the development of the project itself.
