It was officially launched with public and community celebrations in Cape Dorset, Igloolik, and Pangnirtung, Nunavut, as well as at Carleton University in Ottawa, on March 17, 2011.

The Inuit siku Atlas (http://sikuatlas.ca) was developed during nine years of collaboration among many researchers across four Nunavut communities. The atlas was created to respond to the desire of Inuit elders and hunters to share knowledge with Inuit youth, incorporate Inuit knowledge and northern content in the northern education system and share knowledge with scientists and the general public.

The siku Atlas is an online, interactive educational resource to share knowledge, stories, maps, language and lessons to enable northern students, and the general public, to explore and learn about various sea ice topics from Inuit perspectives.

The siku Atlas can be used to learn about:
Inuit knowledge of sea ice features, uses, hazards, and changes
Nunavut community elders, hunters, and researchers involved in the project
Maps of Inuit sea ice knowledge and use
Inuktitut sea ice terminology in different seasons
The Floe Edge Service - satellite imagery available for communities across the Canadian North
Background on the larger sea ice project and researchers involved

Read the official news release or a feature in Nunatsiaq News.
It was exciting to be able to get back to Gjoa Haven in the summer, after our first visit in February. This trip was mainly to work with local collaborators to develop a SSHRC proposal that builds on results from Qanuittumik takuvit?, to fund the research priorities identified in the February workshops. Specifically, we were trying to follow up on interests to have more regular elder-youth land camps, and explore how these camps can help facilitate research and education in the community. I was fortunate to be able to participate in an elder-youth land camp being run by a local teacher at the time, which was an amazing learning experience and also helped greatly to inform proposal development.

During the trip it was also neat to be part of a flag raising ceremony celebrating the historical and ongoing connections between Gjoa Haven and Norway (especially through the legacy of arctic explorer Roald Amundsen), and to experience what it’s like when cruise ship tourists make their short community stops along their Northwest Passage route.
